RapidsThe Institute for Field Education offers field ecology courses to graduate and undergraduate students interested in exploring landscapes from the Arctic to the Tropics. Join a small group of students, scientists, and knowledgeable local experts in an outdoor setting that brings your learning experience to life.

Current courses for 2005 include:

Arctic Field Ecology (download an application or a poster)

Our courses introduce students to quantitative field science, regional natural history, current research issues, and traditional ways of knowing the land. The format gives students a chance to gain practical field skills as well as tools to develop their own research ideas and proposals.

Our mission is to provide a unique educational experience that immerses each student in a particular landscape and the research practices associated with field ecology.

Our goal is that each student comes away with a practical understanding of the capabilities and limits of field research, a confidence to apply themselves to graduate study or field work in the natural sciences, and an enhanced appreciation of the landscapes they study.

Our Arctic courses take place along the rivers and lakes of Nunavut, the Inuit territory of Canada, and the Alaskan Arctic. We camp and travel along these waterways as we learn. Each course involves study of Arctic natural history as well as ongoing research of Arctic ecosystems.
